Apparel pieces are not a one-style-fits-all package. As you many have noticed, a number of garments sport different types of sleeves – each beautiful and complementary, each unique. If you really have not paid much attention to such detail, let the following list guide you. Go ahead; read on what you've been missing out on sleeves. • REGULAR SLEEVES. Think of them as the guy next door: not that outstanding but very popular. Majority of shirts have regular sleeves: plain t-shirts, undershirts and most men's and boys' shirts. The length is enough to cover just your biceps, and the cut lacks frills, puffs or ruffles. • SHORT SLEEVES. Do not mistake them as sleeveless pieces. Short-sleeved apparel actually have sleeves that are way much shorter than the regular sleeves to show just enough muscle without exposing the shoulder balls. This type is intended to flaunt the woman's shapely arms, as in summer outer apparel. It is a less common style for men's apparel, however, but one improvisation of it is by rolling regular sleeves to expose the man's biceps. • PUFFED SLEEVES. Look like Alice in Wonderland with these sleeves. The sleeves are characterized by creases at the base, making the entire fabric puff higher than the shoulder. Most, but not all, varieties usually have ends that enclose the arms and minimize the exposure of the underarms. Puffed sleeves are quite popular in girls' Sunday dresses and simple party wear. Not surprisingly however, they also have their share of fans among women and are seen in some adult blouses and baby-style tees. • RUFFLED SLEEVES. If puffed sleeves are closed and plain, ruffled sleeves are a notch more baring and stylish. The name itself implies that the cloth in the sleeves is sewn in ruffles or folds. Unlike the puffs that somewhat enclose the arms, ruffles are practically unfettered – allowing maximum arm movement while offering some shoulder ball coverage as short sleeves. Again, this particular sleeve type is exclusive to women and girls' cutesy day wear or party wear. • HALF SLEEVES. Half sleeves are half the length of long sleeves, ending just a little above or below the elbow. The style is intended to keep the arm safe from obstructions such as spills from food, dishwashing and other semi-messy work. Half sleeves are a favorite of young moms and working ladies who wish to create an image of decency without totally giving up their freedom to flaunt some skin. The style is rare in men's ready-to-wear apparel. Another variation of the half sleeves is the three-fourth sleeves; the only difference lies in the length so that the latter is much lengthier than half sleeves but much shorter than full sleeves. • LONG SLEEVES. Be princely, professional and smart with these sleeves. This style is common throughout all ages, genders and seasons. Occupying a space in boutique and mall racks like regulars, long sleeves are characteristic of winter apparel, fall wear and office getup. Styles come in regular cuts or creased bases as in puffs, and may also be fitting or flowing. |
